Bulldogs Building Identity: Taylor Takes Command as Lebby Retools for 2026
With Kamario Taylor entrenched at QB1 and Zach Arnett returning to coordinate the defense, Mississippi State looks to rebound in the Spring Ball & Recruiting 2026 season.
As the Mississippi State Bulldogs navigate the Spring Ball & Recruiting 2026 season, head coach Jeff Lebby is establishing a renewed foundation in Starkville. Following a 5-8 campaign that concluded with a 43-29 loss to Wake Forest in the Duke's Mayo Bowl on January 2, the Bulldogs used their April 11 free spring scrimmage at Davis Wade Stadium to showcase a retooled roster and staff. The scrimmage, which featured extended live action without a traditional game format or scorekeeping, highlighted several major offseason storylines.
Taylor Takes the Reins
The most significant development of the spring is the emergence of Kamario Taylor, who has taken over as the undisputed starting quarterback. Taylor's impressive developmental push during spring practices solidified his QB1 status, leading a depth chart that includes veteran arms like AJ Swann and Jaden Rashada. To maximize this offensive potential, Lebby has overhauled his offensive staff heading into 2026, bringing in veteran play-callers Bush Hamdan, Philip Montgomery, and Kevin Johns to elevate the unit.
Arnett Returns to Starkville
On the other side of the ball, a familiar face is back to anchor the defense. Former head coach Zach Arnett has returned as defensive coordinator, tasked with rebuilding a defense that struggled in 2025. Arnett will rely on key returning starters such as Fluff Bothwell, Anthony Evans III, Ayden Williams, and Kelley Jones to implement his scheme.
Transfer Portal Infusion
To accelerate the rebuild, Lebby and his staff heavily utilized the transfer portal, signing over 20 new players. Impact defensive back Jardin Gilbert and speedy wideout Marquis Johnson are expected to make immediate contributions. The Bulldogs also secured key additions like Dealyn Evans, DJ Chester, Jayson Jenkins, Zion Ragins, and Brandon Sneh. With the Spring Ball & Recruiting 2026 season in full swing, Mississippi State is heavily focused on blending these new pieces into a cohesive unit before the fall.
