Bulldogs Shift Focus to Summer: Taylor Takes Charge as Lebby and Arnett Retool

As the Mississippi State Bulldogs move deeper into the Spring Ball & Recruiting 2026 season, head coach Jeff Lebby is overseeing a massive program overhaul. Following a 5-8 campaign in 2025 that concluded with a 43-29 loss to Wake Forest in the Duke's Mayo Bowl on January 2, the Bulldogs have aggressively retooled their roster and coaching staff to prepare for the upcoming fall.

A primary focus of the offseason has been the offense, where Lebby overhauled the staff by bringing in veteran play-callers Bush Hamdan, Philip Montgomery, and Kevin Johns to revamp the system. The undisputed beneficiary of this new braintrust is quarterback Kamario Taylor. Following an impressive developmental push during spring practices, Taylor has secured the starting job. He leads a quarterback room that includes highly-touted returner Jaden Rashada and recent transfer arrival AJ Swann.

Surrounding Taylor is a blend of returning talent and fresh portal acquisitions. Key returners like Fluff Bothwell and Anthony Evans III are expected to take significant leaps. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs tapped heavily into the transfer portal to replace NFL departures Brenen Thompson and Seydou Traore, bringing in over 20 new players. Speedy wideout Marquis Johnson and offensive lineman DJ Chester headline a talented group of newcomers aimed at injecting explosiveness into Lebby's offense.

On the defensive side, Starkville welcomes back a familiar face. Former head coach Zach Arnett has returned as the defensive coordinator, tasked with rebuilding a unit that struggled to find consistency last year. Arnett will rely on key returning starters Ayden Williams and Kelley Jones to anchor the defense, while integrating crucial transfer portal additions like defensive back Jardin Gilbert and defensive lineman Dealyn Evans.

Fans caught an early glimpse of the program's progress on April 11 at Davis Wade Stadium. Rather than a traditional spring game, the Bulldogs held a free spring scrimmage. No score was kept as the team competed in a full-squad setting with extended live action, allowing the new-look coaching staff to evaluate their massive transfer haul. With the remainder of the spring and summer months ahead, Taylor, Arnett, and the rest of the Bulldogs are laying the foundation for a revitalized era of Mississippi State football.
